M.F.A. candidates in the Department
of Studio Art must complete 108 units from the 200 course
series listed for Studio Art (currently 200-269). Please
note that courses numbered between 270 and 289 are for
candidates in the proposed Arts, Computer, and Engineering
Program (ACE), a separate degree program from the M.F.A.
in Studio Art. Studio Art graduate students can take
courses from the ACE offerings (270-289) but only in
addition to specified core requirements. Studio Art
M.F.A. candidates, once having reached winter quarter
of their second year, have the option to substitute
a maximum of two Studio Art class requirements in order
to pursue research and study in related fields. Petitions
and proposed substitute classes are reviewed and decided
upon by both the Chair of Graduate Studies and the Department
Chair.

210 First-Year Graduate Seminar (4 units) *
Introductory theory class to contemporary art: intellectual
history, theoretical antecedents, and current critical
concerns. Required for all first-year students. Offered
fall quarter only. Required for M.F.A. Prerequisite:

211 Workshop Methods and Materials (2 units)

This course is comprised of a series of workshops introducing
graduates to production and
facilities in photography, video, digital media, and
sculpture. Will be offered only once during academic
year. Required for first-year students. Prerequisite:

212 Workshop Career Development (2 units) *
Workshop for various aspects of career development including
but not limited to grant writing, writing a C.V., applying
to teaching jobs, working with museums and galleries,
working in/with public, not-for-profit, and community
arts. Prerequisite: graduate standing. (letter grade)
215 Graduate Seminar: Interdisciplinary Studies
in Art and Culture (4 units)
This class provides the opportunity for in-depth discussion
and inquiry into contemporary art production in relation
to variety of theoretical, cultural, and historical
topics. Course material is determined by the given instructor's
current research interests. Examples of topics include:
post-colonialism and diaspora; issues in feminism; gender
and queer studies; modernisms and modernity; new technologies
and digital culture; autobiography and critical memoir;
experimental cinema and video; popular culture and contemporary
art; tranculturalisms and border cultures; issues in
cultural display and exhibition; the body and cyberspace;
cultural production and censorship; globalism and new
economies of art; political geographies, architecture,
and design. Course format consists of recommended readings,
discussion, and a writing component. Also included may
be field trips, student presentations, screenings, and
assigned lectures. May be repeated for credit. Required

220 Graduate Seminar: Issues in Contemporary
Art (4 units)
This class provides the opportunity for interaction
with a variety of guest speakers (artists,
curators, critics, lecturers from fields outside of
the arts and/or those working cross-disciplinarily).
Course format includes recommended readings, discussions,
writing component, panel participation, and/or public
presentation of student's current work or research.
May be team-
taught. Offered once only during the academic year.
May be repeated for credit. Required for M.F.A. Prerequisite:

230 Graduate Group Critique (4 units)
A critique-based course focusing on the studio production
of the individuals enrolled. Students
are expected to help foster and develop an environment
in which serious and sophisticated peer critique can
take place. May be repeated for credit. Required for
M.F.A. Prerequisite: graduate standing. (letter grade)
234 Graduate Topics in Digital Media (4 units)
This class provides an introduction to art practices
that utilize digital media methods and
concepts. Emphasis is placed on works that are designed
to take advantage of the unique properties of the medium
through which they are produced and delivered. May be
repeated
twice for credit. Prerequisite: graduate standing. (letter

236 Graduate Topics in Studio Production (4 units) *
Graduate group study of a specific medium or art practice
(e.g. painting, video, installation, photography, sculpture/3-D,
performance, digital media, public art, sound art, film,
etc.). Course content includes consideration of technical,
theoretical, historical, and/or formal issues. May be
repeated for credit. Prerequisite: graduate standing.

240 Graduate Independent Study (1-4 units)
Tutorials and directed study in studio production with
a supervising faculty member. In-depth discussions and
assessment of graduate student's studio work in-progress
in relation to contemporary art practices and criticism,
historical precedents, technical and formal concerns,
and/or related interdisciplinary interests. May be repeated
for credit. Required for M.F.A. Prerequisite: graduate
standing and permission of the instructor including
completion and submission (by 2nd week of classes) of

250 Directed Reading and Research (4 units)
Independent study with a supervising faculty member
to develop bibliographies, discuss
assigned reading lists relating to a specified research
topic, help develop and/or assess
student's academic writing, and/or direct academic research.

251 Directed Group Study (4 units) *
Directed reading and/or study group on a given research
topic. Agreed upon meeting structure
may be flexible in order to accommodate off-campus field

255 Graduate Interdisciplinary & Collaborative
Projects (4 units) *
This class is for graduate students working collaboratively
across the School of the Arts (including ACE program)

257 Curatorial Projects (2-8 units) *
Independent or group study for graduates working on
or developing curatorial projects. May be repeated for

260 Graduate Research Seminar (4 units)
(pre-existing course completely revised and expanded
to four additional new classes: 212, 261, 262, 263)
Substantially revised. Preparatory course for written
thesis and thesis exhibition defense. Course materials
include library research, and developing bibliographies
relevant to students' research, discussing methodologies
and practices of contemporary art production. Students
are expected to develop an abstract for their thesis
topic. Required second year. Prerequisite: graduate

261 Graduate Thesis Writing Seminar (4 units)

Seminar for writing as a component of the thesis. Different
models of writing, text, and spoken word will be discussed.

262 Graduate Thesis, Independent
Study (1-4 units) *
Tutorials and directed study in thesis writing, research
and/or studio production with thesis committee chair
and/or thesis committee members to be taken during final
quarter of study. Required for M.F.A. May be repeated

of
the instructor, 210, 215, 220, & 260. One section
must be taken with thesis committee chair in tandem

263 Graduate Thesis, Exhibition Critique (4
units) *
Group critique required for matriculating M.F.A. students
during the quarter in which their thesis exhibitions
are scheduled. Public presentation/lecture on student's
work required. Prerequisites: graduate standing, 210,
215, 220, 230, 240, 260, 261, and 262 course requirements.

269 Cooperative Program and/or Studies Abroad
(12 units) *
For students undertaking a quarter of study at another
UC campus or equivalent academic institution with which
there is a cooperative arrangement with the Department
of Studio Art. Prerequisites: graduate standing, permission

Limited to Teaching Assistants working under the active
