MARA LONNER
Lecturer (MFA 1989, California Institute for the Arts)
teaches courses in drawing, sculpture and design fundamentals.
Lonner's solo exhibitions include "The Sunset Series," at Sandroni Rey
Gallery, Venice, California (2001); "Better," at Deep River Gallery
(1998); and "Spots and Seams," Rio Hondo College, Whittier (1998). She
was the recipient of an ARC Grant from the Durfee Foundation in 2000,
and a California Arts Council Grant in 1998. An example of her recent
work is 'The Sunset Series,' inspired by the contents of Sunset
magazine. 'The overarching poignancy of this 'Magazine for Western
Living' is the desire to establish place, history, individual mark,
labor, and the longing for 'home.' In publication for over 100 years,
the magazine is an index of the vernacular, a manual for ordinary
people to create the ordinary. There’s nothing too extravagant, or too
banal, about this magazine. It appeals to our basic needs: to build,
to grow, to make, to eat, and to create beauty. More importantly, it
appeals to the conflict between what one has, and what one wants.'
