In The Road
An exhibition of new paintings by Ryan Kish and Conor Thompson
Exhibition Dates: November 21, 2014 - January 5, 2015
BUOY is proud to present In The Road, an exhibition of new paintings by Ryan Kish and Conor Thompson. On August 31st Kish and Thompson embarked on a nine-day road trip from Los Angeles to Maine. They painted en plein air at various sites across the country. As a point of departure for the exhibition, the trip provided Kish and Thompson with the opportunity to explore historical tropes of the American road, the zeitgeist of American modernist landscape painting, and their own personal narratives.
Over the course of their trip Kish and Thompson debated painting’s import in the 21st century. These conversations continued over the Internet in the weeks that followed. They decided to document them, and turned their dialogue into a publication that accompanies the exhibition.
In the publication Thompson quotes a passage from Jonathan Franzen’s literary manifesto, Why Bother?: “To write sentences of such authenticity that refuge can be taken in them; isn’t this enough? Isn’t it a lot?” This quote can be read as a mission statement for In The Road. For Kish and Thompson the act of painting is undertaken with the ambition to realize visual harmony and to celebrate life.
